I think bears are super cute animals!! However, when going camping this summer (or at anytime) in Lake Tahoe or Yosemite or any campground that bears are present be absolutely sure NOT to leave any food in your car. Most campgrounds have bear lockers to secure your food. Their sense of smell is 100 times greater than ours and can smell food up to several miles away! Some articles even say they can smell animal carcasses up to 40 miles away! Whew!
I have read articles and watched videos about bears tearing up cars looking for food and when I mean tearing up cars I’m talking about the bear tearing up the doors and ripping car interiors to shreds! Things that bears can smell and will try and get to: food, soda and beverages in cans and bottles, toiletries and even your trash. Don’t keep any food or anything I named above in your tent either. Here are a few videos so you know what I mean!
This bear found a cooler inside a convertible with the top up and windows rolled all the way up.
In this video the bear is trying to pry the door off this truck.
This video doesn’t even mention that the bear was looking for food and it was not at a campground but here is what can happen TO your car if a bear wants to see what you’ve left in there that it can smell!!
Here is a video of a bear cub that got stuck in a car it broke into looking for food!
A Placer County Sheriff’s deputy had to rescue a bear that trapped itself inside a car recently near Lake Tahoe. The bear got into a Subaru Outback in Carnelian Bay and destroyed the interior so badly that the doors couldn’t be unlocked. It was decided the safest way to get the bear out of the car was to break the window. Deputy Lade was brave enough to break the window, allowing the bear to jump out and flee into the forest.
