You can often find me at stores that sell comics and action figures because those are the things I spend my hard earned money on. For at least a year I have been seeing these Metal Earth models of all of my favorite nerdy things. The concept is that you can build a metal model of things like the Millenium Falcon from Star Wars, Iron Man or even a dragon. Each time I see it I place it into my cart because I like to think of myself as crafty. However, it always ends up back on the shelf because I’m certain that I am not as crafty as I think I am.
For Christmas my mother in law got me one! It’s Luke Skywalkers landspeeder from the original Star Wars movie. Over the weekend an attempt was made to finally put this thing together. I grabbed all the tools that the internet said I was going to need and got to work. 2 hours later I had linked together a total of 4 pieces our of 100. What they don’t tell you on the box, if you are a person who isn’t really into detail and enjoy patiently crafting masterpieces, then you are REALLY going to suck at this.
For example, if you get bored playing poker after 3 hands and go ALL IN on a pair of 3’s. This might not be the thing for you. It also didn’t help that I didn’t have proper lighting of a magnifying glass handy because these pieces are INSANELY small. I have no idea how people do this. The moral of this story is stick to the things you are good at.
Could I one day be amazing at putting these things together? Sure. After spending months and month perfecting the craft I could probably make it look really easy. But I believe in picking my battles in life and this would be my own personal Clone War. Like Sweet Brown would say… “Ain’t nobody got time for dat!”
