Irish Coffee!

It was Stanton Delaplane, a travel writer for the San Francisco Chronicle that gets the credit for bringing Irish Coffee to the United States after drinking in at an airport in Ireland.  He started serving it when he worked at the Buena Vista Cafe in San Francisco.  Here’s a recipe for a hot Irish Coffee to warm your bones on cool March nights in the Bay area.

 Ingredients

1 cup freshly brewed hot coffee

1 tablespoon brown sugar

1 “jigger” Irish whiskey (3 tablespoons)

Heavy cream, slightly whipped

Directions

Fill a mug or glass coffee mug with hot boiling water to preheat it, then empty. Pour piping hot fresh coffee into warmed glass about 3/4 full. Add the brown sugar and stir thoroughly. Blend in Irish whiskey. Top with whipped heavy cream. Serve hot.
