Visiting the Golden Gate National Cemetery on Memorial Day

Memorial Day.  What does it mean to you?  As a kid I didn’t understand the true meaning of what it stood for.  All I knew is that we got the day off from school and my parents got a day off from work.  As an adult I have a deeper understanding of what it really means and wishing I can I give this day off back.  I have many friends and family members that have done tours in wars that I am just thankful that I didn’t have to serve in.  Some of my friends and family members deal with PTSD (post traumatic stress disorder) and still, to this day, years after they have already returned home, are awakened by nightmares and night terrors.  Sometimes noises or the way certain people stand or move might trigger a frightening memory or take them back to a place that they wish they can forget.  Our veterans cannot unsee what they saw out there no matter how hard they try.  Whether you agree to why they were out there or not the reality is they return changed…different…if they even return at all.

Memorial Day is a day to remember all of our fallen troops, soldiers, HEROES.  We remember them on this day every year.  Our fallen were fathers, mothers, sons and daughters.  Our fallen were brothers, sisters, aunts and uncles, and cousins.  Our fallen were friends and human beings that were placed in those situations for US.  I feel it is our duty to pay our respects to them AND their families for their sacrifice.  This is my opinion and it’s ok if you disagree or feel different and I respect your opinion regardless of what it is.  I am not here to debate it.  I am simply expressing myself.

I felt even more compelled this year to visit the Golden Gate National Cemetery to pay my respects in person the best way I knew how.  I said a prayer for our fallen soldiers and their families as I am eternally grateful for their service and sacrifice.
